After being chucked out of the competition last night, James Michael has criticised the elimination twist which saw four acts leave the show on the first weekend of the finals.

As revealed on Saturday evening, each judge would have to eliminate one of their acts and James Michael was the boy Gary Barlow choose to send home.

Reacting to the news, he said: “I’m surprised because of the twist. Throwing one person out of each category, I don’t think that’s good.”

“I think I would have done Gary proud. Definitely improved. I wanted to bring my own style in and my own voice in properly. That’s all I wanted to do.”

Although it is extremely unlikely to make James feel better, his mentor Gary did admit afterwards that it was a very difficult decision for him to make.

The Take That man said: “James for me had so much character in his voice. He was like a professional busker.”

“He had so much tone to his voice I thought, here’s someone I can take a real chance on.”

“He really shone last night and nobody gave a bad performance last night. Like I say, it’s the levels of where they were last night. James was the lowest level of all four of my acts.”

Other acts to leave the show this weekend were Jonjo Kerr from Louis Walsh’s overs category, 2 Shoes from Tulisa’s groups and perhaps most surprisingly of all, Amelia Lily from Kelly Rowland’s girls.

The 16-year-old was one of the favourites to win the show before this weekend, but she paid the price for all of Kelly’s girls being strong on the opening night.

As for the how the winner’s betting market is looking after week one of the live shows, Janet Devlin is still the comfortable favourite at 11/4, followed by Misha Bryan at 4/1.

Then, after their strong performance on Saturday evening, The Risk are next in line at 5/1.
