Simon Cowell has reportedly told Gary Barlow that the 2011 X Factor contestants have to improve.

The show suffered a ratings dip last week and X Factor bosses believe it is down to the poor quality of the contestants.

The Take That singer revealed: “Simon said we need to work at the show and make it 10 per cent better each week,┬áso by the end of the series the show will be at least 50 per cent better.”

“That is what we are trying to do this week. We are all upping our game. There is always room for improvement. There can be better song choices, better styling, better performances.”

Gary also warned his acts – Frankie Cocozza, Craig Colton and Marcus Collins – not to get carried away with the attention that the show brings them, sacrificing hard work in the process.

He continued: “The trouble with the artists this year is they are all obsessed with twitter and headlines.”

“It feels as though they are getting a bit above themselves. We are constantly reminding them this is a competition. We are all lucky to be here, we are lucky to be on stage and have millions of people watch us.”

Gary hasn’t escaped criticism himself though, with fellow judge Louis Walsh criticising his song choices.

The Irishman said: “Last week’s show was good, but Gary should have picked better songs. He may be a good songwriter but that doesn’t make you a good judge. His song choices are terrible.”

“He has to realise it is a TV show, it is about the personality, the attitude and the thing I call likeability as well as the voice.”

So, there is plenty to talk about ahead of this weekend’s live show!

Betting wise, one of Louis’ acts, Sami Brookes, is the favourite to leave the show this evening with The Risk current favourites.
